Business presentation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Business presentation - Essay Example It is usually easier to read information because it helps reduce the number of speaking errors that I present and the information is already in a format that sounds academic and professional. Because my greatest challenge is in how I communicate to the audience, I think this is the biggest thing that I actually need to improve upon. It is very difficult to speak in front of my peers especially in a way that is not boring and keeps the audienceââ¬â¢s attention. To avoid making mistakes, I create power points that have too much information and make presentations that are actually based on reading to the audience. There are probably techniques and methods to take the research that I perform to learn about a topic and shrink the knowledge down into a summarized version. Learning how to take research and use it to support the overall purpose of the presentation is critical. Right now, I also struggle in speaking to the audience and need to improve on how I prepare the presentation and actually deliver it to the

Corporate Social Responsibility College - Essay Example (Marrewijk 2003 p 95). The European Commission (2001) defines CSR so that it incorporates social, environmental and economical aspects: CSR is a concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and in their interaction with their stakeholders on a voluntary basis." (European Commission 2001) Companies like UPS, FedEx, DHL and a large number of other multinational and smaller organisations are beginning to, or indeed already have taken the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) very seriously. The logistics and transportation sector plays a positive role in the economic development of societies, spreading opportunity and acting as a backbone for global development and communication, as well as contributing to communities. However, this sector also faces some strong emerging challenges to its perceived social responsibilities. The core business of this industry's direct relation with major sustainability issues such as environmental impact, traffic congestion, energy waste, safety and security, and sustainable infrastructure, puts logistics firms under the careful inspection of various stakeholders. There is a group of consumers who consider CSR in their purchasing decisions (Mohr Webb Harris 2001 p 45). 0ver the past few years, socially responsible consumers have been studied in relation to boycott behaviour (e.g. Klein 2003 p10 ) and cause related marketing (e.g. Polonsky 2001 p8) and it has been found that "negative CSR associations can have a detrimental effect on overall product evaluations, whereas positive CSR associations can enhance product evaluations" (Brown and Dacin 1997, p. 80). Recent surveys in Europe, the U.S. and Australia also suggest consumers do consider CSR policies in their purchasing decisions. The majority of surveyed consumers say they would pay more for goods and services marketed by socially responsible companies. (MORI 2001; Lloyd 2003 p58). Furthermore, as Kotler (1972) predicted, socially responsible consumer behaviour is growing . UPS UPS is one of the most active corporations in logistics sector on CSR issues. They are the biggest of 8 logistic companies in the world with a full triple bottom line report which is aligned with GRI; both sustainability and CSR are mentioned in their annual report for the last 3 years. The UPS website states that sustainability is in the heart of their business strategy. All CSR programs and initiatives are seen as business-as-usual in a well-managed company. Both the Chairman's statement and company mission statement explicitly states the importance of being a good corporate citizen. The Annual report includes a section called "Our Sustainability Statement". UPS has consistently ranked among the most admired companies in the country. They have reinforced the reputation of dependability and reliability by being conservative financially, being good corporate citizens and emphasizing social responsibility in the community. UPS is a tough competitive company but they understand the responsibility of a market leader. UPS policy promotes initiatives with the United Way, developing sustainability, increasing diversity, and limiting

Report on the Religious Life of Planet Earth Essay
Report on the Religious Life of Planet Earth - Essay Example This article will explain what religion looks like. It will provide examples of three beliefs related to religion in line with the function of religion to the survival of human kind. Religion can be defined as a collection of belief systems, cultural systems and worldwide views which relate humanity to the spiritual world (Pope, 1996). In most cases, religions have various symbols, which have their meanings. Certain individuals claim that religion is the act of believing in a supreme being. Most scholars in the discipline of science believe that religion was formulated in order to manipulate humankind. However, other individuals claim that religion is a way of life. As an alien trying to determine the aspect of religion in the world, it is prevalent that the earth is a religious planet. Contrarily, different individuals have different opinions regarding religious status. One of the most prevalent examples that point out the existence of religion on earth is the gathering of individua ls in fellowship (Pope, 1996). Individuals usually gather in certain places in order to fellowship and give thanks to their creator. Therefore, it is necessary to be committed to a certain religion in order to appreciate and understand the teachings. In addition, the philosophy of religion also reveals the existence of religion. It is prevalent that religion would be non-existent if there was no philosophy of religion. Recently, most of the individuals who claim to be religious usually spend most of their time reflecting about the existence of a supreme being. Moreover, they are significantly inspired when they take part in worship acts (Pope, 1996). The planet earth also meets the specifications of a religious planet. This is because approximately 84% of the population comprise of followers of one of the 23 radical religions that are known to the human species (Pope, 1996). Religion enables individuals to understand certain concepts hence; sustaining morality. According to empirica l research, religion plays an essential function in planet earth. For instance, religion helps human beings to define who they are. Additionally, religion holds the society together through the provision of human desires such as integrity, discipline, love and empathy. Some of the individuals believe that religion has a medicinal value that is portrayed through healing especially after prayers. Furthermore, religion also ensures that human beings are able to live according to the guidelines of human life (Pope, 1996). While observing the aspect of religion on earth, I found out that religion was extremely crucial among the believers. As stated above, religion is defined as a response to the dimensions of life which are regarded sacred. Religion can also be defined, by the way an individual prefers to worship and perform their spiritual practices. Research asserts that there are three main religions that are recognized all over the world. They include Christianity, Islam, and Hinduis m (Pope, 1996). In conclusion, the Christians believe in the existence of God who is the sole creator of everything in the universe. In addition, they usually quote the scriptures enshrined in the Holy Bible which resembles an instruction sheet. On the other hand, Muslims believe in a supreme being named Allah.

Howard Zinn Essay Example for Free
Howard Zinn Essay Howard Zinn was born on December 7 19922 in Brooklyn New York. Zinn was raised in a working-class family in Brooklyn, and flew bombing missions for the United States in World War 2, which experience he uses to shape his opposition to war. Howard Zinn is one of the most respected historians, the author of various books and plays, and a passionate activist for radical change. A clear statement of his nature is his autobiography You Cant Be Neutral on a Moving Train. He is perhaps best known for A Peoples History of the United Sates, which presents American history through the eyes of those outside of the political and economic establishment, like the Native Americans, slaves, women, blacks, etc. In his essay Violence and Human Nature Howard Zinn points that; even if humans are capable of violent behavior, it is social conditions that harness that cruelty. He warns us to steer clear of the widespread notion that humans are biologically predisposed to violence and warfare. Mr. Zinn starts off by using an arsenal of famous thinkers, pointing out their pessimistic views and believes on human behavior. Views based on no concrete evidence that we humans are born with this trait called violence. Zinn starts off using Machiavellis positive view in the The Prince that humans tend to be bad. Zinn add great minds such as Einstein and Freud and their correspondence to illustrate their own views on the subject, and their conclusions that humans are violent by nature. Other scholars are also thrown in to support this traditional view of human nature being evil. The writer goes on with the idea that scientific evidence doesnt proves it, and that is the notion that humans are in nature prone to violence. Howard picks on some scientific fields to show as that there is no evidence of human instinct for the kind of aggressive hostility that characterizes war. He turns to sociobiology, where the Harvard professor E.O Wilson in his book On Human nature answers with a yes on the question Are human beings innately aggressive? and finds his evidence not in his field but as Freud did in History. Wilson goes on to describe that humans are born with such a trait as violence, that we own it to our genes. Zinn counter attacks this with the following, Stephen Jay Gould a colleague of Wilson and a expert in evolution categorically just replies when asked that there no evidence forà such a statement by Wilson. Zinn is starting to show us an interesting pattern, a blueprint that clearly show us that every explanation from those important people look to root their selves with evidence found only in History. Zinn invites us to illustrate why History is being picked as the field from where those people can pull their evidence of Human violence. Its easily proven when you choose humans to be evil, you just need to pick your example, and history is flooded with it. Zinn shows us that there is a down side of it picking on history, because it depends on which historical events you examine to be in your favor. Its dangerous and very biased to follow this trail. Zinn goes on to convince us that our concentration get deflected by the real cause of violence and war. Zinn uses the 1986 international conference of scientists in Spain to express their conclusion on the question of human nature and violent aggression, to lure as to the very point of the whole essay that society has the power to harness this violent instinct in humans, and not our biological makeup. To further straighten his observation, Zinn uses the well-known Milgram experiment. In sum, carefully controlled experiments demonstrate that we follow others more often than we might like to think. However, it also seems to true that we dont always conform. We are more likely to conform when authority figures are close by, and are more likely to express our individuality and dissent when the consequences of our actions are more apparent. Also from the area of anthropology Zinn uses the two tribes of The Forest People and The Mountain People from the studies of Colin Turnbull, to show us what an impact can an out side disturbance have on one tribe, which brought out a violent behavior in them. But the second tribe uninterrupted continued on a gentle and peaceful life. Howard decided to turn our attention from all does academic studies to the war itself. He gives himself as an example to explain war. Zinn argues that he and his fellow soldiers killed as a result of a set of experiences thatà brought them to the front lines of war, not because they felt an instinctual compel to do so. He doesnt view the soldiers willingness to go to war as genuine to their human nature but is rather triggered by existing social conditions. This is what is expected from you, the pressure of people around him to do his duty. Zinn recalls being brought up to trust that the nations political leaders would make just and fair choices, and that the world was divided into good and bad countries, his own country being one of the good. He also recalls being trained not to question orders and being reminded that there was no reason to question those orders since they all stemmed from good political leaders and you should obey those people. Ones in the war and having such obedience, produced in him by his society, a soldier easily demonstrates the power of culture in extreme ways, like for example the My Lai Massacre. Where a detachment of units annihilated a whole village consisted only by elderly people, women and children. Zinn decides to show us that in the aftermath of the massacre, GIs as in the case of Charles Hutto said that he did what he was told to do. But we see that also a helicopter offices decides to save as much people as he can from the village below, Howard suggests that men are disposed to war under certain setting. Society should come to turns to this power which it holds over people harnessing this violent instinct and avoid doing so at all costs.

The effect of mobile phones
The effect of mobile phones Introduction The life of human beings has changed a great deal in the past 10 years. One of the most life changing gadgets is the mobile phone which has allowed us to do so much. Mobile phones can be used to: leave notes for yourself and or for others Listening to music on the go Looking at pictures Taking pictures / Taking videos Making a video call Make phone calls from anywhere in the World Playing games Go on social networking sites ( Facebook, Bebo and MySpace) Surf the internet How does all this affect us (the users)? I am investigating the positive and negative effect of mobile phones on the user because mobile phones are used so much now and mobile phones are also known to cause some problems. Recently, the media have published stories linking mobile phones to the development of brain tumours. Positive Leaving notes for yourself and/or other people can be used in your business e.g. must look up how recycling has changed. Or used in your personal life e.g. put washing up away. Listening to music on the go is positive because it can help people to relax; some people believe that it helps them to walk/run faster; some people say it helps them to concentrate if they are revising. Looking at pictures is good because it entertains some people especially if its a funny picture, theres a saying that goes ââ¬Å"right time right placeâ⬠and to remember what happened e.g. meeting someone famous, some people take pictures on their mobile phones to be creative like photographers Taking pictures / videos is good because you can use it for evidence in accidents car crashes and in other crimes like in robberies to record what they were saying and or what they took and or what they are doing. Videos can also be used to record lovely events like a babys first steps. Do a video call is good because it is basically a mini web cam so you can contact anyone in a different country either for personal or professional reasons. Making phone calls is one of the most effective uses of a mobile phone because you can use your phone in different countries to ring anywhere in the World for either business uses or to make personal calls to family members and friends. Playing games is good because it gives you time to relax from your day and is a way of socialising with your friends and contacts. Negative The negative aspects of mobile phones include excessive use of text language can mean that some people have little idea on the correct spelling and grammar to use in normal writing. Also text language can be very confusing and some people may not be able to understand a message e.g. ââ¬Å"hey il brb r u in 2dayâ⬠which means ââ¬Å"hey I will be right back, are you in today?â⬠Listening to music on the go can have a negative effect because if someone is listening to music on their bike it might make it more relaxing to ride but it cuts you off from what is happening around you so you might not hear the siren of an emergency vehicle, or another road user sounding their horn as a warning and even traffic noise that would warn you that buses or lorries were near you. Looking at pictures is negative because it can distract people walking on the pavement and if they suddenly walk into the road they could cause an accident. Taking pictures/videos could be negative because someone could use them in activities such as crime and/ or violence related (e.g. happy slaps). Making a video call can be negative because it can be used anywhere which can distract people especially if its in a public place which is very busy e.g. Oxford street. The negative aspects of making phone calls is because it costs too much to make one phone call from one country to another country e.g. England to Australia would normally cost 50p upward for one minute and even to receive a phone call when you are abroad costs you money. Playing games can be negative because it can waste your time so much e.g. you will start to play a game at 10:00 am and the next time you check the time it could be 5:00 pm and you wonder where the time has gone to. Recently medical research has indicated that using a mobile phone can lead to the following illnesses particularly in young users: Brain tumour: a brain tumour can be caused by using a mobile phone for too long which can cause the brain to warm up Joint pains: Many mobile phone users complain of Neck pain, Thumb pain, Wrist pain and Elbow pain à · Damage to babies: damage to babies can be caused by a woman using a mobile phone when pregnant and putting the phone on her stomach it can cause hyperactivity and difficulties with conduct, emotions and relationships. * Memory loss: a university of Washington was researching on cell phones and they have discovered that rats exposed to cell phone microwaves suffer long-term memory loss Headaches: Headaches can be cause by putting your mobile phone on a loud volume when talking to someone and if youre listening to music with earphones in Scientists disagree on the effects of using mobile phones, some researchers suggest that mobile phones should come with a Government health warning but government officials from the Defence, Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) have advised the public ââ¬Å"not to be alarmed by reports that mobile phones cause health problemsâ⬠they stated that some experiments have been carried out on rats which indicated adverse health effects but that further research was necessary to produce evidence-based recommendations. However they also stated that it was sensible to reduce excessive use of mobile phones. After stating the positive and negative effects that using mobile phones can have on a persons way of life, I have made a technical drawing to show how I would improve the design of mobile phones so that the negative effects could be reduced and to boost the positive effects. HOW I WOULD CHANGE THE WAY MOBILE PHONES ARE DESIGNED I would change how mobile phones are designed because as I am doing products design A level, I can look at products with a critical eye. I decided to draw an exploded mobile phone. I will write what I would do or change: I would use Polymorph because it would be easier to use as the outer layer which means that you could shape it any way you want so it can be shaped like your fingers and or hands which should help people texting. I would use acrylic because it would be easy to use as the buttons and you can cut them out using a laser cutter which means they can be cut to any size and any shape (if it wasnt a touch screen phone) Instead of having a screen and a keypad i would make it so the phone was a touch screen so u can have it both qwerty (horizontal) and normal(vertical) pad
